DECEMBER 13 2014 VINTAGE SLOT CAR CLUB
"Thingies" from back in the 1960's were absolute flights of fancy which did not represent any scale representation of a real car. These cars were in many cases outrageous designs with at times a strong focus on design for speed with light weight and low slung chassis. As outrageous as these designs were, the names given to the cars were also dramatic such as La Cucaracha (Spanish for cockroach), Sonic Needle, Assassin, Renegade, Snake, Manta Ray, Phantom, Ocelot, Blue Monster, Bandit, Banshee, BatRay, Gamma Ray & Stinger. There was a very heated debate at the time that played out in the pages of the slot car magazines concerning the lack of scale appearance of the "thingies", some of that talk lingers even today regarding the 1/24 "wing" cars raced in some commercial raceways that have been said to resemble "foil wrapped wedges of space cheese" - today's incarnation of the "thingies".
A fabulous assortment of ultra rare and unique "thingie" theme cars
were present for this club event. There were an number of Cucaracha cars and a very rare Shinoda bodied scratch built car. Several of those cars were fitted with the ball bearing 26D size taller motor that was a popular performance upgrade back in the 60's.
"LAGUNA SECA" 8 LANE TRACK - THE RACING VENUE
Final "time trial" racing competition with 11 of the the "thingies" logged over 30 laps in 3 minutes.
These cars ran extremely well and the racing was far less carnage then what I remembered from back "in the day".
